Jekyll Island

General James Oglethorpe, the founder of Georgia, named Jekyll Island shortly after 1733. The island name was taken in honor of his friend Sir Joseph Jekyll.

In the late 1730's Oglethorpe appointed William Horton to set up a military post on St. Simons island, and he set up residence on Jekyll Island, where ruins of his home are visible today.
